On my own terms

"Walt Kurtz was one of the most outstanding officers this country has ever produced. He was brilliant and outstanding in every way. He was being groomed for one of the top slots of the corporation. General, Chief of Staff, anything. But he went for himself instead."

Why?

Memoires du Colonel Walter E Kurtz par Bui Diem.

In italic, Colonel Kurtz
In regular, Bui Diem

Cambodia April 30th 1975

I have decided against leaving a record of any kind, too cumbersome, and words cannot describe the horrors of war, the stench of death, the despair, the horror...
I wonder, the top brass, they think they have it figured out each time... But war always ends up chewing its ugly little children. A war to end all wars, perhaps, maybe...

Saigon is falling, like a dead leaf in the wind, and it is not even autumn yet.

The cold hard winter of our years Bui. All we have left to do is stand under the rain and pray that it cleanses our sorrows. Because war is the business of sorrow, of how much you can stomach and how much you can deal. Sorrow is a very important commodity nowadays... That is who we are my friend Bui, harvesters of sorrow.

Soon it will be time for me to retire, to look for a place of final rest like an old tiger having traveled into the heart of darkness. Look at those pictures. This is disgusting... Disgusting.

A war to end all wars... but when... Will it be the end of war, or is war itself, the end... People forget about the horrors of war. I have seen horrors that you wouldn't believe my friend Bui, or maybe you would, surely you have seen your fair share here with me.

Horror, facing horror, confronting horror, changes you forever; it's the fabric of a warrior, my friend Bui... Facing, looking, staring into the face of horror. Not giving away an inch because that's an inch too far, and nowhere to go but forward, through to the other side. Fear is the mind killer, I cannot allow my mind to be killed, I still have much use for it.

You see my friend Bui, war is not only about winning, it is also very much about inflicting the least harm possible, sparing men. Those nabobs... All they see is numbers, plans, as they mumble how many widows they're going to make...

I know what they accuse me of, of being a rogue warlord, of having run a war by myself. The charges are unjustified. They are in fact, under the circumstances of this conflict quite completely insane.

Of course I cannot change this world, but I am intent on fighting this war, on my own terms, and if I can, surviving.

He taught his people how to read in the midst of one of the most savage wars in history. To read Bui, not to kill.

...That's what I was afraid of my friend Bui... That man believed in life while we believed in death.

Devoid of feelings, devoid of feelings... But just. And he did, he did and he won... He won against that steel juggernaut blowing fire from its nostrils...

But inasmuch as injustice can preside upon wars, unjust wills are made to be broken... Even Britain didn't defeat us... We defeated Hitler... He did.. He broke our will, like the straw breaks the back of the Camel...

Look what we did to Vietnam look what we did to it

And we killed our mountains, we killed our valleys, we killed our people, we killed our soul, we became a bloated corpse standing for injustice and oppression, contrariwise to everything we ever put on paper, everything we ever believed in

And it killed it me, it killed my heart, it killed my eyes, it killed my guts, it killed my speech, it killed my words, it killed my feelings, and it killed my men

Pardon Colonel?

We are the hollow men
We are the stuffed men
Leaning together
Headpiece filled with straw. Alas!
Our dried voices, when
We whisper together
Are quiet and meaningless
As wind in dry grass
Or rat's feet over broken glass
In our dry cellar

Cambodia May 9th 1975

When I take it all in consideration, the more I think about it, the more I would like to have had a custodian of my memory, someone who could live to tell. Not about the Vietnam war no, everything has been said about this war, everything and not enough. No, but to brush a fuller portrait of who I was and what I have tried to achieve.

Because I am afraid my son will not understand what I tried to be, that absolute sense of urgency, only to find that the conclusion opens the door to yet another story, many stories.

Throughout my missions I have always been guided by the need to do without further delay, a race, a mad race that doesn't spare lives, the jaws of history that chews people and spits them to the side, lifeless or damaged for good, it feeds, it strives, a madness that menaces to grow collective, and did already several times...

...It has to be put an end to, at some time it does, don't you think?

What does?

History... History, Bui. We spent months uncovering and accumulating evidence. When absolute proof was completed, we acted, we acted like soldiers. When the official army structure didn't serve my purpose, I rearranged it, remolded it, twisted it to pieces, or done with it altogether.

We acted when others where muddying themselves in ideals, politics... That is what they reproach me, that is my crime you see. I remain convinced that every sacrifice we spare ourselves today will be repaid by an even greater sacrifice tomorrow.

In the end I have never asked anyone more than my troops to follow my lead, they did so blindly, selflessly, stubbornly. When U.S Army officers were watching their backs, fearing to be added to the list of « fragged » officers as it is now customary to call them, my men were dying to secure intelligence here and there, unceasingly harassing the foe, leaving them no time to rest.

An army of one,
An army of many
Decided men, moral men,
Men of few words
In the gardens of stone,
Beholding their empty graves.

As for the charges against me, I am unconcerned. I am above their timid, lying morality. And so, I am above caring.

You have all my faith,

Your loving father.

Col Walter E. Kurtz

Cambodia May 13th 1975

Yes... Ideals, politics, bargaining, panhandling towards the end... We willingly assumed all the risks, we conducted this war neither oppressing nor suppressing our emotions, because we are men, and because we are moral men we did not seek to rationalize this conflict, because rationalizing war is an extremity we were not willing to go to... Nor was it desirable for strategy purposes...

Others did the math, we acted whenever an advantage could be taken, no matter how small, we neglected nothing, we spared, our men whenever we could, our ammunition, food, you name it. Everything was in short supply, still we managed to beat them at their game, we mirrored their strategy and learned along, guerrilla tactics, but much more valuably the making of the mind of a warrior. Minds win wars you see, not bombs.

This war was lost in advance for us, we... We didn't read our history books, neglecting minds, dismissive, disorderly, feeble minds, hurried minds not acting but reacting... We would have learned about the French...

My men and I decided to seize the initiative, and to split. We did so as soon as we had sufficient evidence that the official army structure was more of an impediment towards the realization of our goals then anything else. Very early in the conflict. We saw the opportunity present itself and we acted. We acted quickly, decisively, seizing a precious advantage, with the firm intention of making it a war of attrition, persuaded as we were that only the most decided party would win.

We were labeled deserters, criminals, by those who remained in the ranks to be led by bureaucrats, by paper pushers. Surely this mess has won them a few stars on their shoulders.

We did not hesitate to crush and eliminate any obstacle towards the accomplishment of our mission. Civilians that voluntarily stood in the way of our targets were treated as enemy combatants... Perhaps in the future they will find some fancy expression to justify the primacy of hitting a target over humane considerations.

Because war, is not... humane... Or I at least don’t think it is, what could be humane about it? With that in mind we decided to inflict the least harm possible and even incorporate worthy elements from the regular army who could be persuaded to join our cause. We had no other troops to draft on... Plus these were already hardened combatants, I am glad they joined us, but it only added the renegade etiquette to our sorry bunch.

I feel so much anger at being thus labeled myself and my men, by well thinking people not able to win a war. Because winning is what it is about, winning by all means necessary, winning entails making sure the other side doesn't win, by spying on them, sabotaging their actions, confusing them, turning them one against the other, anything. No, those people thought they could win by dropping more bombs, flying more planes, drafting more men, more, more, more. A steel juggernaut swallowed whole by a shady swamp, without further ado, without a sound except for the desperate splattering of its doomed steely limbs...

Not a chance against a meaner, leaner opponent, one fighting for survival. On a land that was theirs, while our troops traveled half the globe to fight for what in the end... For what. I wrote to them before me and my men decided to do things differently. My reports to the joint chief of staff were classified, and only made my situation more precarious, untenable...

Not to mention that man, Ho Chi Minh... He haunts my mind, how could he, what will... With such odds stacked against him. How could he?

Cambodia May 27th 1975

Bui !

What do you think inspires our soldiers? Skulls and F words penciled on their helmets? Bullshit!

Kali

Vous etes un absolutiste Colonel! Ce que vous dites est horrible.

The business of a soldier is death, death is absolute. Horror... Horror is an in-between, an in-between life and death Bui, nothing else, nothing more...

But there is life after death

That is none of my concern Bui, my only mission is to deliver death. You're still asking yourself why... I do not have the answer to that. Soldiers do, or die. I leave it to you and to your likes to worry about the niceties of life, or absence thereof.

Cambodia May 30th 1975

Good evening Colonel

Ah, yes Bui... You have become my shadow it seems...

I wouldn't want to be your shadow Colonel, the shadow of death

What makes you say that Bui?

I have a better understanding of who you are Colonel, I have several pages of notes.

And, that is enough for you to form an opinion?

And the things I have seen also

Bui you are like a child, easily impressionable. To answer your concern I do not believe in death, I believe in life.

Your actions are a testimony to the contrary

Because I am a soldier?

You are more than a soldier Colonel, you are a warlord, waging your own war.

I have a great deal of sympathy for you Bui, you express the strongest opinions without ever raising your voice.

Anger is the sign of a weak man my Colonel.

True, very true. I wage this war because no one else would wage it, because well thinking people like you abhor what winning this war entails.

But you are ready to go to such extremities! There are heads on piques all over the camp, and deep in the jungle too, do you understand what I am saying!

Lower your voice Bui, war you see is the end of sanity. Reason is the first thing that shakes on its foundations in front of the atrocities of war, people like you, politicians, paper pushers, will not understand what I am saying. Getting carried away and losing sight of the objective. We split, my men were as much convinced that I was that the sooner we are done with it, the less lives will be lost.

You and the likes of you know nothing about war. You just unleash with a pencil stroke a beast that is ready to turn on its back and shred you into pieces... You're in the jaws of history, but you do not know how to tame it, no you don’t... You don’t. It seems by the looks of it, that you never will.

And above all, you do not know what it is to be a warrior, you don’t. Like the top brass with their manicured fingers... You have no idea of what is necessary to win a war. You may think that you do, but when facing it, you realize that you don’t, and you start crying like a little child who lost his way...

You always put it in the equation that you will keep your heads on your shoulders, that you will live and make it through, yes, precious little you, savages in a suit with that same age old surviving instinct. And to survive you are ready to feed the beast with countless lives, young bright, vibrant lives... But things don’t always go your way... Like this time, here in Vietnam.

Colonel, maybe if you further explained your motives...

I have no motives. I have a mission and a sense of duty, towards my men and myself, that is all. Motives are for criminals and thieves. I am not a criminal.

Whose crime is it then?

They

Who they?

I don’t know, go ask McNamara.

Cambodia May 31th 1975

(To himself) I should have been a pair of ragged claws scuttling across floors of silent seas...

Pardon my Colonel?

Nothing Bui, nothing that matters to you, or to anyone but me. Have you ever read the technical studies for ammunition? Fragmentation grenades? High velocity bullets... The lexicon of horror. It's pretty gruesome, with pictures, descriptions of inflicted bodily damages, in closed space, open space, size of wounds; Of course we use animals... For the tests. Do you understand me Bui? Do you?! Do you understand!

Colonel, what I can tell so far is that either you are mad, or completely true to yourself, in both cases your life is different from any I have wrote about so far, and I will continue to transcript our conversations, it will be in my opinion a very useful testimony about the war in Vietnam.

And the scale of the crimes committed here?

Yes, that too my Colonel.

You want me to expose bluntly my mindset... But if I told you, then what I have to say would be of no interest, would it?

To the contrary my Colonel

I expected a man like you, what did you expect?

I do not know, I still don’t know

I have told you a lot already Bui, more than I told many others... I hope you will not betray my friendship

I cannot promise you that my Colonel, but I will not betray your words

That is good enough... Good enough. Where were we? When I seen the turn of events here, I decided to act. It was my decision alone and I bear the full responsibility for it. I could not allow a handful of men who did not know the first thing about sacrifice to run this war. Because they would run it irresponsibly, and it would drag forever, waste our resources, ruin, defeat, rout. And it did.

Now Saigon has fallen, and Ho Chi Minh is victorious. Whereas with my Montagnard army I still got a chance to win... To win this war. I have capabilities and men on the ground, able men, committed men. We can sustain a low intensity war that will allow us to hold at the very least central Vietnam, the Highlands. With this tribe here, the Degar. We can cut the Ho Chi Minh trail in the middle and take it from there.

Pourquoi restent t ils?

...

Cambodia, June 3rd 1975

Mon Colonel

Oui mon ami Bui?

Cambodia June 4th 1975, in the morning

Colonel with your permission I have started putting in good order your papers and your library, I am compiling a list of the contents as well as taking notes. The objects of your research are disturbing to say the least, pages and pages about the Assassins sect, books about Kali followers...
Ah yes... Kali. Om aim hrim klim camundayai vicche svaha, Om Kali ma Om
Start reading from page 156. And read out loud please.
"To aid her son in his endeavor to rid the three worlds of the multiplying demon, Raktabija, Parvati entered the cosmic battlefield as the dreaded goddess Kali – dark as death, gaunt with sunken eyes, gaping mouth, with long disheveled hair covering her naked body.
Remember that she was a beautiful woman; ask yourself why would she would do that, you like to ask why... Carry on.
Kali spread her tongue over the battlefield and licked the demon’s falling blood catching on her long, outstretched tongue before the drop could find it’s way to the ground springing a demonic life anew.  Raktabija, without his multiplying numbers was left powerless.  Skanda was able to dispatch Raktabija and all his remaining duplicates with ease.
Skanda, guardian of the heavens, went on to destroy many demons who opposed the reign of the gods.  But he could not defeat the demon Raktabija.  Whenever this demon’s blood touched the ground, a thousand new demons sprang to life.  He seemed unconquerable.
A bit like we seemed ourselves, arriving here with our navy, army and air force... Ironic isn't it, history keeps repeating itself. Read on.
Skanda thanked his mother for her timely help.  To celebrate her victory, Kali danced wildly on the battlefield, bedecking herself with a garland of severed heads and a girdle of severed hands.
Intoxicated with Raktabija’s blood, Kali ran amuck across the three worlds, destroying everything and everyone in her sight.
I am become death, destroyer of the worlds
To restrain her, Shiva took the form of a corpse and blocked her path.  As the goddess, blinded by blood lust, tripped on his lifeless body, she was jolted out of her frenzy.  She wondered if she had killed her own husband.  She placed a foot on Shiva’s chest and brought him back to life.
Shiva then took the form of a little child and began to cry, stirring maternal love in the heart of Kali.  This forced her to shed her fierce form; Kali became Gauri, the radiant mother, bestower of life."
Life triumphs over death. Love over horror.
I see, but you yourself, are you a disciple of Kali?
...
Answer Colonel
I... I am interested in the ways of the Buddha...
You?!
Yes, me.

Cambodia June 5th 1975, late evening

(Reads out loud) "Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name, you are mine."

That’s Isaiah 43, the very beginning of the passage

And the very end of the story of man

You are a believer then, you too want to be redeemed?

What is my crime?

Pardon me?

Why should I be redeemed, what is my crime?

Well, all these dead people

Soldiers, not people, my men do not deliberately kill civilians, like the regular U.S. Army, the Koreans or the Vietcong did.

Still you have crimes to answer for, we all have something to answer for, our crimes can be of greater or smaller magnitude but no one is innocent.

What are my crimes? What is reproached me?

These countless deaths, conducting a war by yourself and seemingly for yourself as well

Their death was decreed by Him and His decrees are immovable.

You are blaming the Lord for your killings?!

No, He shoulders no blame, we do... I do.

Then admit your sin!

Not for an instant no...

But!

Are you God?

No

Then shut up, these are my children, all of them.

Cambodia June 6th 1975, in the evening

Colonel I would like to go back to a statement that you made in an earlier conversation, about the crimes committed in this war.

This war is itself a crime.

Yes, but you specifically referred to crimes by U.S. troops and the Vietcong as well.

Yes, Koreans as well.

I need you to elaborate on these, for the record

Yes, not crimes, massacres is a more appropriate word

Yes, who, where?

It started very early in the conflict, the first were committed by Korean troops. They where part of U.S. war effort here, and maybe they thought they could act with impunity under their American masters.

Between February 12 1966 and March 17 1966, ROK Capital Division of the South Korean Army executed 1,200 unarmed civilians in Tay Vinh village. The Tiger Division they were called... A bunch of criminals. It is yet unclear if they acted on their own, or were doing our dirty work.

That will come to be known as the Tay Vinh massacre, and is the first one that has been documented to my knowledge. Needless to say that many other massacres have been committed here and covered up.

Within the same period, precisely in February 26, 1966, in Go Dai hamlet, Tay Son District of Binh Dinh Province in South Vietnam, the same division massacred 380 unarmed villagers within an hour.

Yes, carry on please

The third one will happen two year later, the Ha My massacre, in February 1968, again by ROK marines... The victims were 135 women, children and elders from thirty households. They then bulldozed a mass grave to cover their crime.

What you can see here, is the emergence of a strain of impunity that will become one of the defining characteristics of the war, and it will drag on till the end.

About a month after this massacre, the Vietcong will retaliate with the Huế massacre. Killing thousands over their 28 days period of occupation of the city. We don't know for sure how many where killed, it is worth mentioning that the official figures for civilian death counts in the destruction of Huế during Tet, primarily by U.S. artillery and naval shelling and aerial bombing, were manipulated to arrive at his figure of nearly 4,000 civilians murdered by the Viet Cong. As you see everyone got their hands dirty here, it is muddy, unclear... Shrouded in propaganda by both sides

This was during the Tet offensive?

Correct.

Yes, carry on please

The My Lai Massacre on March 16, 1968, was the mass murder of between 300 and 500 unarmed citizens in South Vietnam conducted by a unit of the United States Army. All of the victims were civilians and most were women, children, including babies, and elderly people. Many of the victims were raped, beaten, tortured, and some of the bodies were found mutilated.

The massacre took place in the hamlets of Mỹ Lai and My Khe of Sơn Mỹ village

Yes, carry on please

What for?! Hundreds of thousands have died here, what does this all change?

I insist, for the record Colonel.

There has been countless civilian deaths, Officers would routinely cover up the crimes of their men because the paperwork associated with reporting a war crime was too much of a hassle. They would just dispose of the bodies, burn them or otherwise...

I am interested in the facts, you have the facts, dates, places, I want to put them on paper.

Do you... Think... Someone will be held accountable?

Perhaps yes, someone has to...

Bui, you're good to have around in this mess, your innocence is refreshing.

Please continue stating the facts Colonel, people have the right to know

Yes, they paid for it all...

Does your cynicism have any limits?!

None that your curiosity cannot match my friend Bui... Are you interested in my cynicism or in the facts?

Yes, carry on please

Enough, bring me my opium pipe Bui, its there on the little table...

Cambodia June 11th 1975, at dawn

Tell me about you Colonel, why did you join the army?
What made me choose this profession you mean? Well, I am a career military, it is my vocation really. Since an early age, I joined the cadets. I was young and perhaps naive, imbued with heroic ideals. Do you know the story of the Ninos Heroes?
No, is it Spanish for Boy Heroes?
Yes, they were six Mexican teenage military cadets. These cadets died defending Mexico at Mexico City's Chapultepec Castle from invading U.S. forces in the 13 September 1847 Battle of Chapultepec, during the Mexican–American War. One of the cadets, Juan Escutia, wrapped himself with the Mexican flag and jumped from the roof of the castle to keep it from falling into enemy hands. They all followed him to their deaths. I was a bit like that I guess...
You have been decorated many times
Yes, I served my country, I did so with abnegation.
Like those kids?
Yes, ready to die for my country, at all times, it became my way of life. It's all I know really...
You do no longer serve that country do you Colonel?
I forbid you to ever say such a thing Bui! I did not abandon my country because a bunch of puppets condemned me. But it is true that... What are you trying to say Bui?
That you should stop Colonel
You know nothing of the ways of a warrior Bui, I have to find peace.
Then surrender
I will not go on a defeat.
Even victory itself is a defeat for it is best to avoid confrontation altogether
The Chinese are very wise don't you think? But although they wrote things like these, they have also been an empire built with the sword Bui, not with a pencil.
War is not the matter Bui, war is not the matter. What matters is the law, the law is the blade, it turns against you the moment you cease to uphold it.
On which side of the blade are you Colonel?
I am the blade.

Cambodia June 12th 1975, evening

Colonel how do you maintain discipline in this camp?

Like in any army. Every man answers to another and they all answer to me.

A direct chain of command?

Yes, with some adjustments. Team leaders have got leeway to plan and execute operations providing they do not stretch our resources too thin and provide timely intel.

Commandos...

Yes

Your men are all ready to die for you, but you kept silent as to why that is

My men are free to go

Yes that is what you stated last time, now I want to get to the bottom of this, why is it they are following your lead so selflessly?

Because they are selfless?

Stop playing with words Colonel, we are not children

I do not know why, why don’t you go ask them

They all turned me around and one of them even pointed his handgun to my head

That is not very civil I agree...

You want us to believe that you have men that committed, who are ready to die and answer only to you?

That is my definition of an army

How do you inspire such reverence in your men?

As any officer should, I lead from the front and respect my men. I am neither too severe, nor too forgiving. I know each of them by name, which is more than many officers can pretend to.

Interesting.

Yes? But I'm not really the chief here, I too answer to someone, actually to a lot of someones...

How is that?

I maintained the tribe's structure intact, I answer to the council of village chiefs.

You do?

Yes, I told you I'm not a politician, I'm a soldier, my business is not leading the tribe.

What if they told you to stop?

I would cease immediately, but they are as determined as I am. They have nothing to gain from the Viet Cong, that is why Special Forces were sent here to train this tribe in the first place. They have been historically marginalized; I lead their fight for autonomy if you like.

And you settle your accounts with Ho Chi Minh's spirit...

It’s not a personal score, it’s simply a strategy I have in mind

Cutting the Ho Chi Minh trail in half...

Yes, and claiming the autonomy for the Degar

Just to show it can be done?

Yes, these people deserve it.

And Vo Nguyen Giap would find himself fighting on two fronts, with North and South Vietnam effectively cut in half by your shall we say buffer zone

Not a buffer zone for long, my estimates is that we could recapture the south very fast.

You want to succeed where the whole U.S Army has failed?

Precisely. I want to demonstrate that this war was run by incompetents or they would have seen the benefits of a buffer zone in Central Vietnam.

And of partitioning Vietnam along ethnic lines?

A lesser evil than seeing it all fall in the hands of the communists. Kill with a borrowed sword.

And the Degar are that borrowed sword...

Yes, I’m borrowing it from Ho Chi Minh actually...

Cambodia June 13th 1975, evening

Colonel if I may ask you, do you still consider yourself a hero? Because all these medals and citations prove that your country does consider you as a hero

A hero? No, I am no hero; I am a man on a mission. Heroes are meant to inspire others; I just seek to enlighten myself while accomplishing what I have to.

But one might sense a strong sense of history in you, and you referred to history several times.

History is His judgment on each and every one of us. History judges our names, and those names will either be honored or live forever in infamy. Each and every one of us, yes, every precious and wicked little soul

How will history judge you Colonel?

That’s a good question, I do not know, but if I succeed at what I have in mind, this tribe, the Degar, will remember my name. And that is good enough for me.

How will others consider you, what do you think my readers will think of you?

They have to read between the lines... I think they will hate me...

Does others moral judgment weight on you?

It did, used to... I am past that now, beyond the stench of rightfulness, a form of clinging really as the Buddha put it so well; the source of all suffering is clinging, including clinging to what others think of us, our reputation if you will

And how is your reputation Colonel Kurtz?

You know about it, an outlaw, a renegade. But these things do not concern me much, I am more interested in making history, at least, my very own. And incidentally I am trying to make it to the shortlist.

What shortlist?

A list of people I admire, whom I think have qualities and flaws that reflect my own

Can you name them for us?

Achilles

Alexander The Great

Ashoka The Great

Napoleon Bonaparte

Erwin Rommel

But above all the Buddha, the mightiest warrior of all, he stampeded his own ego... And faced Mara and his legions and defeated him. At such a young age... Outstanding.

Who is Mara?

The Devil himself. The Archenemy. The true enemy behind which many faces hide.

You want to be remembered in history as these where? You aspire for greatness?

Well, no... I have no delusions of greatness, if that is what you have in mind. I just want to accomplish my destiny like they did. Is it not the right of each and every one of us?

They are all warriors.

And men of peace, a warrior is also a man of peace Bui, if he is not then he lives only for destruction and has to be disposed of, put to death, like a sick animal...

Any living people?

(Smiles) No. I guess it’s easier to admire the dead, don’t you think?

Cambodia June 14th 1975, evening

Colonel, may I?

Ah here you are Bui, ready for your little ritual, your tape recorder, your always sharp pencils, paper, and little tripod stool...

Yes Colonel, this testimony will surely be useful

We dont know for sure Bui, your butterfly collection might turn up to be more... Useful... But I appreciate your company.

Thank you Colonel.

Yes, what is it, what are you going to ask me again.

Do you feel betrayed Colonel?

By whom? Do you mean do I harbor a feeling of guilt? Of shame?

Yes, betrayed, betrayed by your superiors, the top brass as you call them.

They are no longer my superiors now, are they?

Yes but,

Enough! One of the few precious rewards of running your own war is that you answer to no one but yourself. And who do you think I should answer to anyway... A friend from the services told me once how JFK emerged flabbergasted from his office upon learning of the death of Ngo Dinh Diem...

He couldn't believe it, although clear orders had been given to dispose of Diem... Ngo and his clan have been a major handicap here, a total absence of legitimacy, we should have gotten rid of him from the start.

The spoiled brat wanted to get rid of one of one of his toys but didn't think that things would end up with Diem and his brother catching a bullet in the head. You want me to answer to a man so remote from the practical necessities of war, or to the clique of amateurs that kept feeding him lies about how winnable this war was? Answer Bui!

I understand your dilemma.

That's just the start of it you see...

Cambodia June 18th 1975, morning

Bonjour mon Colonel

Oui Bui...

Faites, faites mon ami.

Erwin Rommel said about war "Men are basically smart or dumb and lazy or ambitious. The dumb and ambitious ones are dangerous and I get rid of them. The dumb and lazy ones I give mundane duties. The smart ambitious ones I put on my staff. The smart and lazy ones I make my commanders."

Here's a man who knew a couple of things about war

(The Colonel hands me a picture of Erwin Rommel)

I see, but you yourself, do you admire Rommel?

Yes, to start with Rommel was not a member of the Nazi party, not even in thought, he was above all a soldier. A military man. Erwin Rommel epitomized the gentleman warrior. A man of principles.

His grave has probably been visited numerous times by the men he chose to take as prisoners and not execute like Hitler had so ordered.  This is the least I could say in his defense, but his actions speak for themselves.

And after all who are we to judge, let history do the judgment for hers is wise and never fails. And I am convinced that generations from now, in that very messy affair that was World War II, people will still consider Erwin Rommel as a man with a clean conscience.

Well, Colonel, you give me the feeling that there is a brotherhood of warriors.

Yes, very much so, I am ready to vouch for Rommel at any time, I am convinced that he would vouch for me too. We are men who penetrated the essence of the matter.

As for myself I wage my own war like you keep telling me... I wonder what is it that you have in mind...

Under the authority of the village chiefs

They do not care how it’s done, my mandate is to win this war by any means, they have trust in me. Soldiers are men you can trust, unlike politicians who are either too scared to take a decision and prefer to stay on the margins, or only do what is favored by most not what is necessary.

That is quite a broad mandate

You have to have broad shoulders in this business.

I have a feeling that you have accomplished your destiny Colonel, here you are with tens of decorations fighting your own war

Decorations? Fool’s gold, that's what it is... If I am to fight a war it will be in my own name, if not I'm not interested. Everyone can go fight their own goddamn wars.

Yes, but you who do you answer to?

To God and my conscience

What if he deems your actions to be evil?

Well I should be punished for it, but not before having been given the time to accomplish my mission.

That sounds like something the Devil himself might say... Your mission matters more to you than your own self?

How else do you think I am going to win? I can only count on the selfishness of Giap who after I secure Central Vietnam and raid the South, will want to keep at least what he has, the North.

The North I will not dispute. For now.

I am comforted hearing you say that you believe in God

Well I have to believe in something don't you think?

And your library is quite rich in religious and esoteric books, how did you find faith Colonel?

It’s always been there, plus His job description fits my needs.

Weighted and found lacking...
That is from the Bible Colonel, am I right?
Weighted and found lacking... Weighted and found lacking... The midgets of history, they lied to the American people from the start, and never accepted to face the truth even once from then on.  Cowards. Refusing to act when a clear course of action was there for all to see...
What course of action Colonel?
Dividing Vietnam into three, the North, Central Vietnam as an autonomous region and South Vietnam under Bao Dai... I found him to be exactly as I was told about him, very astute and malleable.
That is what you would have done?
That is what I have advised them repeatedly to do, my insistence in the face of their collective incompetency and inadequacy to the realities of the terrain drew me only trouble.
That is why you chose to assume sole command of this division here?
Division you say? We are no more than 3000, but we are training men as you seen. My estimate is that when we reach 10 divisions this war could be won pretty quickly. The U.S army chose to hold the land and needed countless troops for that. The way we run this war is by attrition, we strike here and there, unseen, unheard, unfathomable... What is unseen is invincible... As for achieving victory, 10 divisions is all I need. I will have them within 2 years.
You already control large swaths of the Highlands, how did you achieve that with only 3000 men?
Our organization in commandos allows us to cover a lot of terrain, it makes our presence felt, and feared. Targeted assassinations, mostly cadres and officers of the Viet Cong
Assassinations?
That's what Special Forces do.
You are assassins then! That explains your pages and pages about the Assassins sect. You too, an assassin!
Bui... You do not understand the necessities of war, we are not assassins no, assassination is a method, a tool in the tools of war. Given our small number, we hit where it hurts the most, officers and cadres like I said. The Viet Cong find their strength in their organization and cadres, we are slowly obliterating them in this region. One by one.
People like you will always call people like me assassins, because we are the ones doing the dirty work while you can afford to have a clean conscience. But this time we are not doing anyone's dirty work anymore. No, there are ideals in this war, liberating the Degar from oppression. Because undoubtedly the communists won’t tolerate their independence.
There aren't many wars fought in the name of ideals anymore...

The Vietnam war will free the U.S Army from the weight of any moral judgment in future wars... No, no more ideals for us, just practical military necessity...
Very well, Bui, thank you but my men and I have business to attend to.
Thank you Colonel
Dismissed

Cambodia June 23rd 1975, evening

Thank you for showing up in such a short notice, Bui, take a seat

Yes Colonel

Bui, I would like you to be my personal Attaché of some sort, you will be in charge of writing this testimony as you call it, putting my papers and library in good order and also there's some correspondence...

I would rather stay independent Colonel, notwithstanding, I will continue taking notes and taking care of your papers and library.

Independent? Good enough... I haven't shown you everything; in that chest over there you will find my correspondence...

With whom?

Ho Chi Minh... Dating back from 1968...

What! You have been corresponding with Ho Chi Minh?

We wrote back and forth, occasionally, in English because he enjoyed to practice and in French too... Mostly in French as a matter of fact, the language of diplomacy, full of subtleties...

Colonel this correspondence would be of invaluable worth to my readers, to fully understand the intricacies of this war. I would be honored to be able to document it.

Ho Chi Minh and I did discuss war too often, but that was of my own doing, he was more interested in photography... As for the intricacies of war, well my friend you are in the midst of it... How intricate does it look to you?

Veuillez agréer votre Excellence, mes hommages, etc,

Colonel Walter E. Kurtz

Armée des États-Unis d'Amérique

Hanoi, Le 25 Octobre 1968

Hô Chi Minh Chef de l'Armée Nationale de Libération du Vietnam au Colonel Walter. E. Kurtz, Armée des États-Unis d'Amérique

Colonel,

Veuillez agréer votre Excellence, mes hommages, etc,

Colonel Walter E. Kurtz

Armée des États-Unis d'Amérique

Hanoi, Le 15 Novembre 1968

Hô Chi Minh Chef de l'Armée Nationale de Libération du Vietnam au Colonel Walter. E. Kurtz, Armée des États-Unis d'Amérique

Colonel,

Pride Begoeth the Fall, Colonel. Always.

Votre Excellence,

From Hô Chi Minh Commander in Chief of the National Liberation Army of Vietnam, to the Colonel Walter. E. Kurtz, U.S Army,

Colonel,

I think this would be a most appropriate answer to your shall we say 'concerns' about protecting a friendly regime. Just when did your nation make that friend Colonel? It is turning to be a most embarrassing one...

Truth alone triumphs; not falsehood.
Through truth the divine path is spread out

It is a mantra, from the Mundaka Upanishad, perhaps you should read it...

Your Excellency,

I do find it outrageous that while we are exchanging about mantras, men are dying from both sides.

I expect you to be more practical about this matter like a good military man would.

Hanoi, Le 23 Décembre 1968

Hô Chi Minh Chef de l'Armée Nationale de Libération du Vietnam au Colonel Walter. E. Kurtz, Armée des États-Unis d'Amérique

Colonel,

Avec mes amitiés;

Your Excellency,

Like I said before, nothing practical in your reply. As for the moral high ground question, I am here only serving my country, but I have to admit you are pretty adept at indoctrination.

From Hô Chi Minh Commander in Chief of the National Liberation Army of Vietnam, to the Colonel Walter. E. Kurtz, U.S Army,

Colonel,

Your reply caused me a good laugh, indeed your ingenuity is very rare amongst your peers in the U.S Army.

Colonel, here is what I propose, I sense in you a man of a certain quality, so let us not waste time discussing this war, we both know it is unjust and that we both would rather be doing something else. Especially you.

I have been delighted by the pictures of Saigon that you sent with your last letter, vous avez l'oeuil Colonel. As a matter of fact photography is a subject of keen interest of mine. I used to practice that art during my stay in Paris, retouches on pictures and such, and even may I humbly admit, some work of my own.

Here is an essay I wrote about photography, I would like your honest opinion on it.

Sincere Regards,

Post Scriptum

The purpose of a people has to be one and indivisible, if not they are not a people but an ensemble of factions. That is who you fight for Colonel, for factions, not for your people. Do not mistake yourself. As for factions, what is divided must fall. That is as ineluctable as your defeat here, isn't that your very own motto Colonel?  United we stand, divided we fall?

You will find history to be a severe but just master. To discern truth from falsehood in all matters, great or small, is the ultimate mastery Colonel. Nothing surpasses it.

Clameurs à l'Est, Attaque a l'Ouest.

Secure victory while it is formless, nurture it and shape it in secret so that it is yours and no one else's. Shape what is shapeless, form what is formless, fill what is void, void what is filled. That is the art of war.

Kurtz: Who is the greatest warrior of all?
Ho Chi Minh: The mighty Buddha
Kurtz: That wandering monk from India? Although he had a military education as a prince he never to my knowledge waged any battle in his life. Why would he be the greatest warrior?
Ho Chi Minh: He defeated his own lower self and defeated Mara and his legions. All this he did and never took a life or spilled blood, yet he accomplished what I thus described.

Kurtz: Who is Mara?

Ho Chi Minh: The Devil himself. The Archenemy. The true enemy behind which many faces hide.
Kurtz: I understand, the greatest battle is to defeat one’s own self.
Kurtz: Who would be your exemplary military leader?

Ho Chi Minh: Well I have to admit, I too am an apprentice of a master. His name was Abdelkrim Al Khattabi. A freedom fighter from Morocco in Northern Africa. He fought the Spanish and then the French invaders. Heroic tales of men charging artillery lines on horseback. He taught both of these colonial powers a few lessons in their time over there...

Kurtz: I do not know that man but I will study his life as you did. What did he teach you?

Ho Chi Minh: That no feat is impossible for a man fighting for his homeland, as for his tactics, if you study them you will see that they have been inspiring us in our struggle against imperialism here, American military call them hit and run.

Sadly he has been labeled a revolutionary and forced into exile in Egypt. To die in a foreign land is the greatest sorrow that can befall to a man who fought to liberate his land.

Kurtz: Your men have surrounded our position at (ed. unreadable, blood stains)  we will not surrender, they can massacre us at will (ed. unreadable, blood stains) we (ed. unreadable, blood stains) ready to die

Ho Chi Minh: I will spare you and your men. I will spare you as often as necessary for my teachings to be imparted.

Kurtz: Why did you spare us? I would not have spared you.

Ho Chi Minh: That is precisely why I have spared you.

Kurtz: Teach me strategy

Ho Chi Minh: That I will not, I would rather have you come up with your own. You will thank me later.

Kurtz: Teach me strategy

Ho Chi Minh: Read Sun Tzu, the art of war, especially the chapters about terrain, all is there, it hasn't changed since.

Kurtz: We already studied Sun Tzu while at the military academy, it's a classic. I am disappointed.

Ho Chi Minh: Studying is not enough! Learn it by heart, Chinese Generals where able to recite whole chapters of many military treaties. Beware of disappointment too, it can get you killed in war surer than a bullet can.

Kurtz : Uncle Ho, are you dead?

Ho Chi Minh: I suspected that you would ask, the answer is yes. I have entrusted my closest aide to have this last reply sent to you, with it you will find my last teachings for you to follow the path you have embarked on. Know that the paths are many, but that the way is one. Farewell Comrade, maybe someday I will get to read your critique about my essay on photography.

Cambodge 5 Juillet 1975,

Dear Walter,

You have asked me often to show you the way, I have taught you the art of war, the art of ruse, secrecy and dissimulation. You must master too the craft of the spy. That too, I will teach you. With it my teachings will be complete.

I have enclosed a game of strategy that I devised in my youth, it allows you to match your opponents to their opposite Chinese astrological signs and elements and to build or defeat coalitions, there are four coalitions dividing the twelve signs, each of these signs can be ruled by one of five elements.

Each sign and element has strengths and weaknesses you can use. Arrange your strategy according to this knowledge to maximize your strength, and use this knowledge to confuse your enemies by turning them one against the other and sowing division in their ranks.

Division is the greatest woe that can be inflicted on the opposing camp. It is the surest way to its ruin. Crafty indeed is the warrior that causes the enemy to collapse under the weight of its own dissensions, miscalculations and lies.

You often asked me to teach you strategy, this is my contribution. I called this game The Tiger Strike. Wars are first won in the mind, this strategy game will sharpen your mind.

You went further down the path then anyone I have seen, how you achieved that still puzzles me. Where you arrive does not matter as much as what you became by following the path

As you will see in the charts that accompany the game, you are born in the year of the Tiger. Of all Tigers, those born under the element of the metal are those most suited to become warriors, but you, are born under the wood element.

Wood grows and expends, they are the ones best suited to learn and put into practice what they have been taught. That is why I picked you to be my apprentice.

As a Tiger you are a born warrior, you will have to fight for everything in life. Although immensely generous nothing will be given to you without effort.

You bring luck to your house and those around you are safe, you are quite lucky indeed.

Rashness suits you, your anger can be such, that the legend portrays you fighting a Dragon. That is your own anger you are fighting you see... Beware of your anger. You are also feared and respected, a born leader of men.

Your enemies, fearing you, will seldom confront you head on, but rather seek to undermine you by infamous acts and words. That is why it is said that you are heartless towards them when you strike, your way is one of honor and merit, theirs is one of cowardice and deceit.

The path of the Tiger is fraught with dangers and difficulties who would rebuff anyone else, but not you.

All this I knew about you since the start, much more can be said about you, but I sketched what mattered to me.

All this I knew without ever meeting you in person.

To know your opponent, but to stay hidden is the craft of the spy.

That Colonel, will complete my teachings.

There is much about you that you want to know Walter, the more you want to know, the more you have to be ready to endure.

Know that your path is yours because you are who you are. The paths are many, but The Way is One.

My path and yours have crossed here, but The Way never diverged.

Never step aside from The Way, your path may be hidden from all but it is clear for you to see. As a warrior always fight for a just cause, for truth alone triumphs not falsehood. And be mindful, ever mindful, of history's judgment upon you.

Examine yourself and each and every one of your actions under the light of justice, truth and eternity. If you achieve that, you will have attained the highest wisdom. The Buddha achieved precisely that and more.

Know that depending on your actions your name will either be honored amongst warriors, or live forever in infamy.

I have enclosed a Tiger sign pendant for you, I am a Tiger myself, born under the metal element.

It was mine when I was younger, a fierce warrior like you. I have led many fights, my cause was that of humanity and dignity, it is and remains an endless battle.

Then one day I ceased to be a Tiger and I became a man.

As for us, it can be said that we have been adversaries, but never enemies. I held you in the highest esteem because beyond this war, I knew what you stand for and represent.

My last advice to you are the last words of the Buddha, strive for your own liberation with diligence.

Strive for your own liberation with diligence.

Uncle Ho

Cambodge 6 Juillet 1975 a l'aube,

"Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name, you are mine."
Colonel! One last question!

Yes Bui...

Why?

For a brother in arms, bedeviled by lesser men, because that is lesser men's lot when facing anyone that is great and true.

Ho Chi Minh?

To discern truth from falsehood in all matters Bui, is the ultimate mastery

Adieu Bui

I have at this stage to dedicate my diaries of Colonel Walter E Kurtz by Bui Diem,

To the loving memory of Marlon Brando.

I do sincerely hope they are any good, and that we can get together and enjoy Mojitos at Ernest's favorite place someday.

Of course the tab will be on the one who outlive us all, that truest friend we pompously call The Almighty.

Yours truly , N

About the author and what I'm trying to do here

Rabat, Morocco June 5th 2011

Well, its time for a little show and tell. I have been profoundly impressed with Apocalypse Now from the first time I have seen it in my teen years. I would then proceed to see it tens of times since, but I didn't know then what I know now, that this movie would be my favorite film and a source for inspiration and thought.

To further my understanding of this major piece, I ventured into researching the sources of Coppola, and in the process discovered and read the Golden Bough,  Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, and T.S Eliot poetry. This research made me discover all these important works, and begin to decipher how Coppola and Milius made the film, to quote Coppola " My film is not a movie. It is not about Vietnam. It is Vietnam."

How then did he succeed in depicting so effectively the war of Vietnam ? One learns after a little digging that there's a lot of strata in this work, it draws from other deep thought heavy duty stuff.

Watching this movie, repeatedly,  made me develop some dependence of some kind, from the opening scene to the final one, I too, like Willard, like Coppola, have been drawn, fascinated, overwhelmed by the character played by Marlon Brando, the doom tainted Godlike figure of Colonel Walter E. Kurtz.

The huge screen presence of Brando, and his understanding of the depersonalization of Kurtz, his shedding of his last remnants of humanity and his placing himself above the stain of morality, the quality of the actors and the work they did, the depth of the visual rendering of this slow journey into the heart of darkness by Coppola and his team, the general intricacy of the whole movie, is outstanding, outstanding.

Of course, the final confrontation with Kurtz puts an end to his story in Coppola's work, however I felt if not frustrated by the brevity of the encounter and the few lines of Kurtz where he expresses his mindset and his views of the war, his sense of life and death, then at least very interested in furthering my understanding of Kurtz, of who he was, what he stood for, and what he tried to achieve.

To do that, I needed to revive Kurtz, and I did. The diaries are based on the assumption that Kurtz survived his assassination attempt by Willard and resumed command of his shadow army.

I also needed someone to probe the mind and soul of Kurtz and so I introduced him to the fictional but very real character of Bui Diem, a French speaking journalist that reaches Kurtz camp a few days before the fall of Saigon, and proceeds to document both the character of Kurtz and what he considers is his very important testimony about the war and its atrocities.

The actual Bui Diem is a South Vietnamese journalist and politician who has been closely involved in the tractations between South Vietnam, the U.S. and North Vietnam. He will come to write a book,  In The Jaws of History, about the negociations and the long list of failures that will lead to the final defeat. I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in the backstage show of the Vietnam war.

Bui, Kurtz and Ho Chi Minh will often exchange in French. I took this liberty as allowed by storytelling 'technique',

I do not have in mind to apologize to English readers, if anything I did this deliberately to accentuate the fact that the character of Kurtz is both complex and hard to reach.

There has been several entries in the diaries leading up to this day, and frankly it has been a very interesting adventure. I still do not know where this will lead me, however I realize that in studying Kurtz, the archetypal warrior, there is something there, something that can lead me to further my understanding the war in Vietnam and of Kurtz and how this war wants to swallow him whole and how he doesn't fight it. He has a sense of destiny that is very unique.

So there, a conjunction of interests, in Coppola's work, Brando's acting, in the war itself and pertaining questions, POW's, MIA, the Tet offensive, Special Forces, Ho Chi Minh and the Vietcong, etc, etc.

As for me, I am in my mid thirties, regular guy. But above all I wanted to find out why Kurtz got off the boat, why he went the whole way, why this man, out of norms, reeking of excellence, chose to split, to become a renegade, wanted for murder, targeted for assassination.

Sincerely, etc, etc,

N
